Is Magic Real?

I’m a professional magician. It’s my job to create Magic. More specifically, it’s my job to create a sense of magic, a feeling of wonder. In my experience 99% of people know that what I do is for entertainment. Well, maybe 90% of people…There’s always the other 10% of people who for various reasons (Religion, upbringing, life experiences) believe that it is absolutely and literally real, some even believe that what I do is part of the ‘Dark Arts.’ But that’s for a whole other blog…Next week’s blog in fact!

The bottom line is that my magic IS entertainment. However, great magic has the ability to transcend 'normal' entertainment because great magic transcends 'normal.' Great magic breaks the rules of whatever normal is and even if it’s just for a moment, those rules no longer apply. That’s something that doesn't happen very often in the day to day life of the average person so good magic gives us a glimpse of the surreal, the abnormal, the 'other', the unknown.

A good magician guides you on a metaphorical journey and holds your hand, conducting you safely into the unknown. Now, depending on the performer and their style, they might release your hand and let you drop into the abyss briefly. Or they may show you that abnormal is different or even scary, yes, but ultimately fun and positive. I think if my audiences experience this, even briefly, then THAT is the magic that is real and that’s my goal as a magician.

Or, you know what? Maybe it’s 'just a trick.' And that's okay too! For me, this is my job, I work for many different kinds of people and in different kinds of situations so I know that it won't always be a magical moment of wonder. however I will always aim for that special magic moment, that is the ultimate goal.

So hopefully one day we will meet and I can show you some magic...maybe you will feel that magic moment of wonder? Maybe you will feel transformed!
