Midweek Magic Club. Just Magic :)

Over 10 years ago I went for a coffee and a chat about ideas with my good friend Adam Turkington. We discussed lots of things, talked about all sorts and I drank too many Americanos. Nothing much came through until the bill was paid and we were literally standing up to leave when Adam suddenly had a thought, and excitedly exclaimed “Wait, What about this?!”

It’s now 2023 and I can proudly say that Adam and I have been running ‘Midweek Magic Club’ for 10 years. What is it? Well, it’s a magic night for the public. It’s a spit and sawdust, no frills, underground style night of close-up Magic. I host the evening and we hire 3 other magicians to join me in performing walkabout magic, close up magic for the crowd. On the second Wednesday of every month, the Green Room bar in The Black Box in Belfast turns into the only place to come and see close up magic in Belfast that’s curated by a professional magician and an events organiser who both care about cool events and cool magic.

Midweek Magic Club feels like home to me. I’ve been performing Magic there for so long now and no matter what is going on in my life I’ve had to get there and be in the zone. But that’s the special magic of Midweek Magic Club - no matter what you’re going through, whether performer or audience member, The Green Room becomes a space that is utterly separate to the real world. You walk into the intimate room, order a drink at the bar from the consistently lovely staff at The Black Box and choose a table. The music, curated by Adam, is perfect for the evening. The beats blend into the room and back up the magic performances nicely. The drinks, chat, music and magic combine and it doesn’t take long for that familiar atmosphere to flow...It’s a certain kind of buzz, it’s unique to Midweek Magic, there’s magic in the air.

The Black Box is perfect for Midweek Magic. It’s just the coolest venue in Belfast. It’s warm and friendly and focuses on cool gigs and events. There really is nowhere else in Belfast that can provide the same atmosphere for the kind of magic we provide. I’m very grateful to get to perform there so often. And Adam? Well, he is also warm and friendly and I trust his immense experience in running events and creating unique artistic experiences to make Belfast a better place. So when Adam calls and says “I’ve got this thing…I’ll tell you about it in a bit, but first are you free?” The answer is always yes. He’s the Bat Signal in the sky to my magical Batman…Or something.

I urge you to come try Midweek Magic Club. It’s a special, communal, magical experience. A gig that you go away from with a sense of wonder, magic, mystery, confusion, laughter and a general sense of ‘WHAT THE FUCK?!’ (In a good way, of course.) In fact, this one guy came to Midweek Magic Club and his mind was blown. He quit his job the very next day, became a Buddhist Monk and now lives in a monastery on a mountain in Tibet. Or something.
